Oklahoma elected its first openly gay member of the state Legislature Tuesday as Democrat Al McAffrey defeated two opponents to represent Oklahoma City in the state House of Representatives.

McAffrey, 58, is a funeral director, member of the Choctaw Nation, Navy veteran and former Oklahoma City police officer. He won 51 percent of the Democratic primary vote for the state House's District 88, which includes downtown Oklahoma City.
