Delegate calls for override of gay-ban veto

WINDOW ROCK – At least one supporter of council legislation to ban gay marriage on the reservation said he plans to call for an override of President Joe Shirley Jr.’s veto of the bill earlier this week.

Shirley, who had been quiet about the issue during a blizzard of publicity when the proposal first surfaced late last year, cited many reasons for his veto.

He called the Diné Marriage Act of 2005 discriminatory, and stated that he’d rather see such a law come from the general voting public.

Delegate Larry Anderson (Fort Defiance), who sponsored the act, said he was surprised at Shirley’s strongly worded memorandum to Council Speaker Lawrence T. Morgan announcing the veto.
