WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — The debate over same-sex marriage has spilled over to the Navajo reservation, with an openly gay citizen of the Navajo Nation saying a proposed ban on such unions is just another step towards assimilation.
“This act is against tradition, our own culture and our way of life,” said Sherrick Roanhorse, 24, a homosexual Navajo man who attends the University of New Mexico.
When not at school in Albuquerque, Roanhorse lives on the reservation near Steamboat, Ariz.
He said Navajo tradition teaches fairness — not discrimination.
