Two-spirit files claim with Human Rights Commission

Cucumber offering cited as among offensive actions

A gay Aboriginal employee at Lakehead University has filed a complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Commission, claiming discrimination based on race, sexual orientation, and creed played a role in his dismissal.

Spencer Rowe says he had planned to protest inappropriate treatment at Lakehead as soon as he cleared probation, but he ended up being dismissed just before his six-month probation ended in November.

“My career has been utterly and totally destroyed,” Rowe said in a telephone interview in mid-March. Even if he wins his case, he said it might be difficult to get another job because universities tend to shy away from hiring people with reputations for rocking the boat.
