In 1975 Randy Burns and Barbara Cameron founded Gay American Indians, the first Native gay and lesbian group to educate the world on Indigenous LGBTQ people. More groups began to organize in the mid 80’s and after the first International Two-Spirit Gathering in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1988. It was around this time that the Two Spirit Movement officially began. The basic goal of this movement is to restore the role of the Two Spirit person in Indigenous North American communities. Much of the organizing for this movement takes place at Two Spirit gatherings listed on the NativeOUT’s Two Spirit Gatherings page. NativeOUT is just one of these 20+ organized grassroots Indigenous LGBTQ-Two-Spirit groups across North America involved in the Native LGBTQ Two Spirit Movement.
